What are easy ways to prevent fuel waste while I'm driving?
As gas prices remain high, there's all the more reason to make sure you're not wasting fuel during your daily commute. Fortunately, there are some simple measures you can take to help with optimizing fuel-efficiency. At Phil and Son Auto Repair, our local mechanics can conduct auto maintenance that will improve your vehicle's fuel-economy. There are also measures you can take during your daily routine to make sure that fuel isn't going to waste.
Simple Tips for Boosting MPGs
While going about your daily driving routine, there are some things you can do to help ensure that fuel isn't being wasted. For one you'll want to be sure you aren't carrying along a bunch of unnecessary weight. Your fuel-efficiency can worsen by 1% for every extra 100 pounds in your car. It's also important that you're driving with correct tire pressure. Generally, tire pressure is supposed to be at a point between 30 and 35 psi, but you'll want to take a look at your particular pressure requirement and make sure you're following that specification. With underinflated tires, the engine will have to exert more power to get the soft rubber to roll down the road. Consequently, you could see a dip in MPGs. You should also make sure your gas cap is returned to a secure position after each time you fill up. A loose/missing gas cap could allow fuel to evaporate before it gets the chance to travel to your engine.
At our local auto shop, we can quickly and affordably conduct auto maintenance that will help your car get more miles per gallon. Air filters should be replaced about every 13,000 miles, which will help ensure that the right amount of air can get to your combustion chamber. This will prevent your engine from burning extra fuel to compensate for a deficiency of air. Fuel filters should be replaced about every 25,000 miles so that contaminants don't hurt gas mileage and engine performance. There are also other basic maintenance tasks that we can complete that will help with optimizing fuel-efficiency, such as spark plug replacement and full-service oil changes.
