Signs of Cooling System Trouble that We Can Fix at Our Manchester, NH Auto Shop
Automotive cooling systems have a variety of parts, such as the water pump, thermostat, radiator, pressure cap, cooling fan, and hoses. If any aspect of the cooling system isn't working properly, then your car will be at greater risk of overheating, which could cause major engine damage. This makes it important to get to the shop when you first suspect that cooling system trouble is brewing. At Phil and Son Auto Repair, our local mechanics have extensive experience with diagnosing and fixing cooling system problems.
Common Symptoms of Cooling System Failure
In many cases, overheating occurs due to leaks in the cooling system. One common sign of a coolant leak is that the coolant warning light illuminates on the dashboard. If your car is leaking coolant internally, then you may see a lot of white exhaust smoke billowing out of your tailpipe. This could be a sign of a blown head gasket. And if coolant is leaking externally, then you may see colorful fluid accumulating on the ground beneath your vehicle. Commonly, coolant is green, but yours could be a different color such as pink or yellow. When coolant is leaking, the drop in fluid pressure can cause the coolant's boiling point to become lower, which may lead to white steam emerging from underneath your hood.
There's also cause for concern if your temperature gauge has ascended into the red zone, which could indicate that serious cooling system trouble is brewing. In this situation, it's a good idea to find a parking lot where you can safely pull over, at which point you can call the shop and explain any symptoms. Then you can get professional advice on whether or not it seems safe to continue operating your vehicle.
