Common Causes of No-Start We Can Fix at Our Manchester, NH Auto Shop
As soon as you notice that your engine isn't firing up as quickly or easily as usual, you'll want to make it a priority to get to the shop for an inspection. If you ignore the issue, it could quickly worsen and then require repairs that are more expensive. At Phil and Son Auto Repair, our local mechanics are highly experienced with diagnosing and repairing problems that prevent engines from starting up like they should.
Why won't my engine start?
Commonly, fuel-related issues are why cars won't start. If your fuel filter is all clogged up, then your engine might not receive enough fuel to fire up. By replacing your fuel filter every 20,000 to 30,000 miles, you can avoid this problem. A faulty fuel pump can also cause problems with getting your engine to start because gas won't be able to reliably travel between the tank and engine. Warning signs of fuel pump trouble include surging, sputtering, decreasing fuel-efficiency, and a whining sound emerging from the gas tank. Also, your engine may struggle to start up if fuel injectors are dirty. A fuel additive can be helpful with eliminating pollutants from injectors.
Another common cause of no-start is a bad starter. A sign of starter failure is that your engine won't start but your dash lights flash on and you hear a clicking noise. Starter trouble could also cause a grinding sound.
Problems with the battery/charging system can also prevent your engine from coming roaring to life. Car batteries die due to a variety of reasons, including parasitic draws, corroded/loose connections, old age, forgetting to turn off headlights, and a failing alternator. Symptoms of an alternator problem include dimming/flickering headlights, issues with interior electrical accessories, and a dashboard warning light that reads GEN or ALT or comes in the shape of a little battery.
